About this project
ITV game show “The Cube” with Philip Schofield has been renamed for 2020 “The Million Pound Cube Celebrity” and “The Million Pound Cube”
The program is one of the UKs top and most well known game shows over the last decade, which has been reinvented with two contestants per game along with many new games. The games either allow one or both players to be in The Cube, where they need to complete a task that is a LOT harder than they look on TV.
To bring the old game freeze system to this decade, we used a custom built 14 meter diameter truss system, 120 cameras, 3 Red Dragons Epics and 24 cameras for a photogrammetry and volumetric system to capture 3D data. We also created a full CGI model of the entire set, accurate to the millimetre accuracy.
Bullet Time
Using the 120 cameras 6K and 3 Red Dragons record video at 6K with everything recorded in RAW, giving us the freedom in post to really push in if needed and to maximise the light we had available. The 6K Red Dragons were positioned at either end and also one in the centre of the rig, this allowed us to cut off 50% of the rig if a camera man, crew or crane was in shot we can cut that section of rig out and still have a lead in and lead out.
During the filming we recorded about 14TBs of data, just under 50,000 photos and hundreds of hours of raw video. All was being shot, downloaded, aligned, the intro and outro added and graded to match, the final clip graded to match other footage filmed on set and exported in real time at 4K in the format they needed to drop straight into their edit suite, whilst also creating previews for the director and production crew to see, as it was happening. Done by NWD onsite editing & post production staff.
Photogrammetry and Volumetric Capture
We also used an additional 24 high quality 6K cameras spread through the bullet time rig to capture ultra high quality footage, then using our own in-house processes we created a full 3D model of the contestants and added them to an exact replica of the studio set, which was built by hand by our in-house 3D genius. This allows us to move around the scene in any direction you would like and create mind bending camera flight paths!
